Strasbourg, France, capital of the book for the year 2024
France's Strasbourg selected as World Book Capital for 2024
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) chose Strasbourg as the World Book Capital for the year 2024.
Thus, Strasbourg becomes the first French city to win this title since its launch in 2001.
In a statement, the United Nations organization expressed its "admiration" for the importance Strasbourg attaches to the book "as a means to address the challenges of social assimilation and climate change," according to AFP.
UNESCO said that Strasbourg, the only French city to take part in the competition, "highlights the role of writers in sharing environmental concerns and scientific knowledge, while prioritizing young people as agents of change," according to AFP.
"The bet with this nomination was to show that is not only Strasbourg's very strong link with reading linked to its very rich heritage," said the winning French city's mayor, Jean Barsegian, at a press conference following the official announcement of the city's victory.
"The book is alive in Strasbourg and has an audience, it is a voracious, book-loving city, with an amazing array of writers, illustrators and publishing houses.
" This festive year will start on April 23, 2024, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
Thus, Strasbourg became the 24th city to hold the title of World Book Capital since 2001.
Among the cities previously selected by UNESCO in this context are: Madrid (2001), Alexandria (2002), Beirut (2009), Sharjah (2019), Guadalajara (2022) and Accra (2023).
It is worth noting that Strasbourg competed for this title with 9 other cities: Amman, Jordan, Havana, Cuba, lasi, Romania, Obidos, Portugal, Plovdiv, Portugal, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Salamanca, Spain, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.
